BOWLING - SATURDAY 5 PIN
This program runs on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. with athletes bowling 2 games. There are spaces available for approximately 110 athletes. WE MUST HAVE VOLUNTEERS FOR WHEELCHAIRS! If not enough volunteers then this area of recreational bowling may no longer be available. The athletes on Saturday are more developmental then competitive but will still have some competitive opportunities. This program runs for 20 weeks with a fun bowl at the end of the season.
BOWLING - MONDAY 10 PIN
The 10 pin competitive program runs Monday nights from 6:45 to 9:00 p.m. with athletes bowling 3 games. There are spots available for 32 - 10 pin bowlers. This program runs for 20 weeks during the fall and winter months. The 10 pin bowlers are divided up into different divisions, depending on their skills. They also enjoy some fun with High-Low doubles and Beat the Coach/Mother/Father. The 10 pin bowlers are competitive and travel to one or two tournaments a year.
BOWLING - MONDAY 5 PIN
This 5 pin bowling program runs Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with athletes bowling 3 games. There are spaces available for 40 athletes with preference given to those who have bowled on Monday nights in previous years and that have not missed more than 6 games. A list of these athletes (as designated by the coach) can be found at registration.
This program is more competitive than Saturday bowling and runs the same as a regular league, with athletes rolling off and committing to travel, if they are selected. The coaches who coach on Mondays are certified so that skills can be worked on and developed. (Those athletes who do not agree to travel should bowl Saturday). This program runs for 20 weeks with a banquet at the end of the season.
BASKETBALL
Basketball is an evening of fun. Basic skills are taught and practiced. This is a non-competitive program although we hope to have some fun games with neighboring zones. At present there is no limit to the number of athletes who can participate.
CURLING - Development
This is the third year we are offering curling. It is a 12 week course starting in January where basic skills are taught. Numbers are limited to 12 with preference being given to those who were in the program the previous year.
CURLING - Competitve
Competitive curling regular program begins in December 2005. There are 10 spots available. However, 5 spots are reserved for the team attending the Saskatchewan Winter Games. The other 5 sports are open to curlers who have been in developmental curling for 2 years or competitive churling last year. Any open spots are on a first come basis.
FLOOR HOCKEY
Floor Hockey is a hybrid of hockey and ringette in one. Players use a straight stick with a felt tip end and a ringette style puck. Currently we have two teams, a competitive and a recreational team. A strong emphasis is placed on basic skills and general knowledge of the rules as well there is a strict enforcement of proper warm-ups, respect for opponents and team mates alike. Also, the importance of fair play and sportsmanship.
SWIMMING - COMPETITIVE
The program will be open to athletes that have basic swimming ability. They should be prepared to swim repetitions of 25 and 50 metres. The athletes will be taught proper technique to improve their own abilities, as well as learning new strokes and skills associated with speed swimming. Athletes should be able to swim 25 metres without assistance to be eligible for this program. The program will be limited to 50 athletes, and will run Saturdays 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Harry Bailey Pool. (Must be on deck for warm ups at 4:45 p.m.) The program runs for 30 weeks and travel to a couple of meets every year.
SWIMMING - I CAN SWIM PROGRAM
This program is run by the Lasers at the Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre in conjunction with Special Olympics Saskatoon. It is open to all atheltes. This program is designed to teach step by step the proper skills and abilities for swimming. the program rewards athletes with numerous progress reports and "sticker" to attach to a poster to high light the athletes' accomplishments. The first skill reward is for blowing bubbles, the last (#54) is for swimming 200 metres. The overall rewards for the athlete are significant, especially for athletes requiring high levels of attention. The program will run Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Athletes have a choice of attending once per week or twice per week. The program will be limited to 60 athletes per night. there are three sessions during the year, fall, winter, and spring.
TRACK & FIELD (ATHLETICS)
Our program is an introduction to Track & Field. We do things such as stretching, running, playing games, and most of all we try to have a lot of fun. Throughout the year we teach the different events that we compete in. Our club participates in a number of local track meets throughout the year and we encourage our athletes to represent the club at these meets. We look forward to another great season.
MASTER TRACK PROGRAM (previously known as Walk Program)
Mall walking- a great way to get some exercise in the middle of winter and a chance to visit with friends as you walk. This program is only a few years old but is very much enjoyed by a large number of athletes of all ages. Everyone has a great time, last year the athletes walked enough miles to travel to Toronto and back.
SNOWSHOEING
This program runs if we have enough snow during the winter. It is lots of fun and the fresh air is enjoyed byt he athletes. It is held on Sundays at Victoria Park, hoever, the start date depends on the weather. Basic skills of snow shoeing are taught and practiced. As well as the proper care of snow shoes. There is a limit of 10 athletes for this program. We need to have a minimum of 5 athletes for this program to occur.
SPEED SKATING
Speed Skating is taught through the Lions Speed Skating Club. You must register with them as well as with us. This will enable the athletes to enter into Special Olympic Competitions. Fees are also paid directly to the Lions Speed Skating Club.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING - RECREATIONAL
This is a short term recreational program at a reduced fee for those participants wanting to try out Synchronized Swimming for the first time. These programs will run Sept. - Dec. and Jan. - May. Fall participants may choose to extend their short term programs to continue swimming after December.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING - COMPETITIVE
We are continuing to run our full year program. The girls (boys are welcome also) enjoy themselves a lot. Fees will include a video of the year end water show and a free gift at the end of the year. Athletes train once per week for 1 1/2 hours in the pool and have at least two competitive opportunities throughout the year.
GOLF
The golf program is limited to 15 athletes. All athletes registered must be at least 15 years old. The athletes have golf pros to assist them with their training. The day for this program is yet undecided. It is usually held on a Tuesday but last year it had to be moved to Wednesday. Special Olympics Saskatoon has golf clubs for athletes to use. All spots are on a first come basis.
SOCCER - INDOOR & OUTDOOR
These programs are split into beginner and advanced. The beginner program is designed for athletes just trying soccer for the first time or those players just wanting to play in a fun atmosphere. The objective is to teach athletes basic soccer skills ie: passing, shooting, dribbling, and helps to develop inter-personal skills with all the other athletes. Having fun playing the sport is our number one goal. The advanced program is designed for the more advanced athletes looking for a competitive atmosphere to play in. Hard work, team play, and positional play are all part of the program. A year end tournament is held for the outdoor program, while some exhibition games are held with other zones for the indoor program. The beginners group will practice first and then will be followed by the more advanced athletes. Soccer is open to all athletes, currently there is no limit, come out and have some fun guaranteed.
Indoor and Outdoor are two separate programs. If you want to be in both programs, you must register for both programs.
SOFTBALL - LEAGUE AND RECREATIONAL
The softball program currently has two teams, a competitive team and a recreational program, to suit the needs of athletes of all ability levels. a strong emphasis is placed on the basic skills needed and the rules of the game. Also high on the list is to play hard and most importantly have fun, but at the same time respecting opponents and team mates alike.
Both programs practice on Thursdays, with the recreational going first and the competitive group to follow. The competitive group belongs to a local softball league and usually plays on Monday Evenings.
